Brain imaging

At Umeå University and Region Västerbotten, extensive research that focuses on brain imaging is conducted. The Center for Medical Technology and Radiation Physics, MT-FoU contributes to this research through strong methodological expertise. Many research projects are also based in our department. We are mainly focused on blood supply and fluid flows in the brain. We contribute to the implementation of many local clinical research projects regarding neurological diseases and aging. Our expertise has been built up through external research grants and now involves several doctoral students, post-docs as well as students within the framework of project courses and degree projects.

National and International Collaborations
The activities take place in close collaboration with the Umeå Center for Functional Brain Imaging, UFBI, at Umeå University, with a research magnetic camera as a starting point. In the project, we collaborate with some ten researchers and doctors from the region and Umeå University, as well as leading national and international partners.

Examples of areas we work towards are:

  • Assessment of blood supply in case of stroke.
  • Fluid flows, blood flows and brain changes incase ofhydrocephalus.
  • Vascular stiffness and arterial pulsations inthe aging brain.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid flows andthecleaning of decay products in the brain.
  • Blood supplyof the eye in case of glaucoma.
